Does Your Business Need A Google+ Page?

Not everyone needs every service that rolls out on the Web. Every time something new happens, it seems, especially if it happens because someone big and famous did it, or a large corporation did it, then a bunch of people jump in to test it and then start advocating its use.

Let’s get specific. Google+ is what I’m talking about.

It’s been around about three months. I use it. I like it. But most of my audience isn’t there. That is, people running businesses in Adams County, Pa. They’re not there yet. Are you?

But that doesn’t mean anything to me. Google+ is about more than just finding or connecting with my audience. There are other benefits, and that’s why I went ahead and secured my business page the day that Google+ rolled them out.

My page has exactly 0 followers, and that’s OK. I haven’t posted anything there other than my last couple of blog posts. But that’s not the point.

Popular business marketing writer Frank Reed concluded an article on Google+ with these words:

Google+ brand pages are going to change. Maybe we should remember that only the tech crowd is on Google+ at the moment anyway and rushing to get a Google+ brand page in place as a business may not make sense at all if none of our audience is there yet.

I like Frank Reed. He’s usually right on target with his assessments, and I agree with everything else he says in that article up to that last paragraph. So why do I disagree with that? Very simple. Sometimes you do it just so it’s there when you need it.

I do think Robert Scoble’s tirade about not having more than one admin for a business page is a bit of a joke. They’re coming, people. They’re coming. Just be patient. Not every service has to be perfect the day it rolls out. In fact, most Web services aren’t perfect at all, even after years of being online. Facebook didn’t have a way to send out targeted messages to only one select group of friends until AFTER Google+ did it first. But it’s still the most popular social network online.

Google+ definitely has some growing to do. It’s nowhere near it’s full potential. Will it get there? Maybe. Maybe not. But let’s at least give it a chance.

If you own an Adams County, Pa. business and you’re wondering whether you should join Google+ or not, or whether or not you should get a business page, I’m not going to tell you that you should. But think about this. You can get a personal profile and a business page and do nothing with them until you deem they’re important enough to do so. What harm would there be in that?
