Is Cyber Monday All Hype?

According to comScore, it’s the biggest online shopping day of the year. But some people are saying it’s a myth. And 57% of Christmas holiday shoppers will do their shopping in brick-and-mortar stores after today. Of course, I’m talking about Cyber Monday. Is it hype, or is it really the day to shop online?

Many online retailers encourage online shopping on this day by offering discounts. You know, just like brick-and-mortar stores do for Black Friday.

But if you shop online on Cyber Monday you won’t have to worry about being pepper sprayed, shot, or trampled upon by a greedy mob. And if you’re a retailer you can certainly expand your business model. After all, call it a myth, all hype, or reality, the truth is people are getting more and more comfortable shopping online. And the sales reflect it. That’s why last year Cyber Monday was the Internet’s biggest day in history.

And this year could be even bigger.

Personally, I think Internet sales will grow. This year, next year, and the year after. That doesn’t mean that brick-and-mortar sales will decline or that the Internet will replace your local merchant. It just means that people are getting comfortable with buying online. That’s why it makes sense to have a website. Savvy retailers provide a place for shoppers to make necessary and luxury purchases in a safe and secure environment.

Marketing a small business online isn’t rocket science. And there’s no magic formula. No secret sauce. No big secret to learn. All it takes is a little time and patience, and the willingness to learn a few new skills.

And, of course, a website helps. Preferably one with a shopping cart. Maybe a newsletter. Perhaps a blog even. And an online marketing strategy that is effective and well thought out. None of that is out of the question. What is out of the question is just sitting on the sidelines and watching while your competition scoops up the online deals.

Online marketing isn’t expensive. Not if you do it right and you have the right guide. Is there hype? Sure. Perhaps even surrounding Cyber Monday. But you don’t have to buy into that. Just keep a level head and do what makes sense for your business.
