What Are External Links?

When it comes to building links for your website, there are three types of links.

  1. Inbound links – Links on other websites that link back to yours.
  2. Internal links - Links that point from one page on your website to another.
  3. External links – Links on your site that point to other sites, or pages, on the web.

There is a place for each type of link. Most SEOs will sing the praises of inbound links forever and ignore the other two. Some SEOs will sing the praises of internal links and maybe give a nod to inbound links, or place them on equal ground with internal links while ignoring external links. Few SEOs know the true value of external links.

External links can make your website an authority. All you have to do is find other websites on the web that act as a great resource for your readers and send your readers to those websites. Do that enough times and you’ll be considered an authority.

A good link portfolio has a fair amount of each type of link. But it isn’t enough to build a lot of links. You can actually increase your rankings and secure top search engine positioning with just a few links. Getting the right links is better than getting a lot. External links help round out your link portfolio and do more to make your website an authority than virtually anything else.
