Static websites just don’t cut it any more. Those are websites that you build in one day and then forget about. You might do some initial promotion – a press release, some link building, directory submissions; but once you’ve promoted it, you forget about it and move on. It’s static.
Static is bad. If you manage to get a static website to rank well for an important keyword, it will likely not hold onto that ranking for long. Which is why you need to do more than just build it and forget it. You need to add fresh content often.
There are several ways you can ensure that your website has fresh content added to it on a regular basis. Here are some of my favorite.
- Company blog – Add a blog to your website and write to it at least three days a week. Every day, if possible. SEO your blog posts, but more importantly, provide valuable information to your readers to keep them coming back for more. The more often you update your blog, the more often the search engines will crawl it.
- Press releases – In the old days, you’d write a press release and send it out to a few newspapers and radio and TV stations. Today, you want to optimize it for the search engines and post it online.
- Build a community – There are various ways to build a community online. You can add a forum to your website, invite comments on your blog, or find a variety of other ways to encourage participation in your website. Start a social community using one of various social media tools online.
- User-Generated Content – There are a few ways to get user-generated content as well. You can allow comments on your blog, start a forum, build a social community, or accept articles for submission. UGC is something you don’t have to manage too closely. You can appoint a moderator to ensure you don’t get spammed or that content you don’t approve of appears on your website.
Don’t settle for a static website. Get your website ranked with fresh content often.
