Lead Generation Vs. SEO

I am occasionally reminded that few people new to Internet marketing really understand SEO. They don’t understand what the letters stand for, what they mean, or why it’s important. But every business owner understands the importance of lead generation. Without good leads, you won’t close sales.

That’s why I am considering changing the way I talk about online marketing. Instead of discussing search engine optimization, which is a technical word that only speaks to insiders with knowledge of jargon, I believe I’ll start talking about online lead generation methods, a category of which SEO can rightly be considered to be a member.

I prefer to speak of online lead generation because it’s a business essential. Search engine optimization is a method for accomplishing the task. The task itself – lead generation – is a necessary component to any business.

When you look at it this way, it makes sense to discuss SEO as a lead generation method. Your goal is to draw searchers into your website by offering them a search result based on their query at one of the search engines. But you can accomplish the same goal through other means as well. It really doesn’t matter which means you use as long as you get the prospect into your door. But I firmly believe that effective lead generation uses as many methods and strategies at our disposal to increase our chances of obtaining a lead.

It’s time to view the search engines as an integral part of your sales process – the lead generation process.
