If you live and work in South Central Pennsylvania, or run a business in this area, then you may have heard of something called Twitter. It’s not a bird, though their logo mascot is a rather funny-looking bird.
So you’ve got your Central Pa. website up and running and you are wondering how to promote it. You’ve SEOd it to the hilt and you’re considering a run at social media. Twitter sounds like a good game, huh? Well, actually, it is.
Is Twitter Good For SEO?
One of the benefits to using Twitter – ONE of the benefits – is that it does carry some SEO benefit. Keep in mind that the search engines return Twitter messages in their search queries in real time. In fact, Google has a realtime channel on its search menu. That should give you some indication of Twitter’s SEO value.
But exactly how does Twitter benefit you SEO-wise?
Here are four specific ways that Twitter can pass on SEO benefit to your website:
- Semantic keyword text – That’s just fancy jargon for using the right words. The search engines can gauge what a link is about by the words you use in your surrounding text – as well as the words within the URL itself. For instance, if your link points to an Adams County ice cream parlor and your tweet says “Adams County Pa.’s best ice cream,” then the search engines will pick up on those clues.
- Stave off the short URLs – There are good solid reasons to use short URLs. But if you want your links to have SEO value, then short URLs will work against you. Use the long URL instead, the permalink with your keyword in it.
- Practice link diversity – If you link to the same website over and over again – in other words, all you do is promote yourself – then the search engines will likely consider your Twitter account a spam account. That will work against you. Instead, share great resources on the topics you like to tweet about, then when you do promote your own site the links will carry more weight.
- Maintain your Twitter authority – That is, keep a good reputation. Don’t be a spammer, tweet and retweet often, and don’t be afraid to engage with your followers in a little conversation on your Twitter stream. These practices lead to great Twitter authority.
Of Course, SEO Isn’t Everything
While I believe that Twitter has SEO benefits, I wouldn’t encourage you to start a Twitter account and manage your Twitter account solely for the purpose of obtaining SEO benefit. You really want to work on the social benefits of Twitter as your primary consideration, but it is OK to be mindful of the SEO benefits that all social media provide.
SEO and Twitter are a good combination. They can work together or work against each other. Need more information? Don’t be afraid to call us. 717-528-4005.
